Negative Review of Braun Thermoscan IRT 3020 Compact Ear Thermometer

We bought one of these to use at home. It was used perhaps a dozen times over 6 months, and then stopped working permanently. I'm a medical doctor and have electronic thermometers at work which get used dozens of times a day and have a lifespan measured in years - so this one breaking as it did just isn't good enough.

Disposable lens filters for guaranteed accuracy and hygiene, Babies and children can suffer from fever frequently throughout the year, and parents will usually take their child's temperature several times during each bout of fever, depending on how unwell the child feels. Braun disposable lens filters enable hygienic use without having to clean or disinfect the sensor and virtually eliminate contamination passing from one person to another. What's more, fitting a new Braun lens filter each time makes sure that dirt or ear wax don't build up and clog the filter membrane, which could lead to inaccurate temperature readings. It's therefore vital that the Braun ThermoScan lens filter on the temperature sensor is replaced every single time a temperature reading is taken.

Only Braun lens filters fit properly and give accurate results, Braun lens filters are purpose designed to fit the Braun range and give professional accuracy, unlike generic products which stop the temperature sensor working properly. New Braun certified disposable lens filters are also BPA and latex free for safer use. Look for the Braun logo on each lens filter to guarantee that you get the most accurate results and peace of mind.

Here's how to use and change the lens filter each time, 1. Place a new lens filter on the thermometer tip before each measurement
2. Take the temperature with lens filter fitted on the thermometer tip
3. The temperature will be shown on the display
4. Press the button below the thermometer tip to eject the used lens filter after each temperature measurement.

  • Frequently asked questions about Braun ThermoScan ear thermometers, Q: Are temperature readings in the ear suitable for everyone?
A: The Braun ThermoScan probe was designed to avoid damaging the eardrum, regardless of the patient's age. Ear thermometers should not be used if the person has an outer ear infection (otitis externa), as this could cause them pain. In addition, you should never take a temperature in an ear that contains blood or any drainage. Use the opposite ear if medication has been placed in the infected ear canal. Keep in mind the following tips:

    • Always take the temperature in the same ear, as the reading in the right ear may naturally differ from that in the left ear
    • Other things can have an effect on ear temperatures, especially when someone has:
    • Been lying on one ear or the other?
    • Had their ears covered?
    • Been exposed to very hot or very cold temperatures or Been recently swimming or bathing
    • In these cases, wait 30 minutes before taking a temperature. If prescription eardrops or other ear medications have been placed in the ear canal, use the other ear for a temperature reading. For accurate readings the ear must be free from obstructions or excess earwax.
Q: How do Braun ThermoScan ear thermometers work?
A: Braun ThermoScan thermometers measure the infrared heat generated by the eardrum and surrounding tissue. When the Braun ThermoScan is placed in the ear, it continuously monitors the infrared heat emitted by the eardrum. Once the thermometer obtains an accurate reading, the measurement is complete and the result is displayed.
      Q: What is infrared heat?
A: Infrared heat is the natural warmth given out by our bodies. It's used in medicine to soothe and relax your muscles. Ear thermometers measure the infrared heat emitted by the human ear. It's like taking a picture in the ear - the brighter the red in the picture, the higher the temperature in your ear. What's more, ear thermometers do not give out any infrared heat. It is the infrared heat emitted by the eardrum that is measured by the ear thermometer.
Q: Is the Braun ThermoScan thermometer suitable for all ages?
A: The probe was designed to avoid damaging the eardrum, regardless of the person's age. Even though the probe does not fit into the ear canal of a new-born baby, clinical studies have confirmed that accurate temperature readings can be obtained in this age group if the ThermoScan is used very carefully.
Q: Are there any situations where the Braun ThermoScan should not be used?
A: You should not use the Braun ThermoScan if the person has an outer ear infection (otitis externa), as this could cause them pain. . Never take a temperature in an ear that contains blood or any drainage. Use the opposite ear if medication has been placed in the infected ear canal.

So Simple!. This is a brilliant little thermometer, so easy to use and a spot on reading everytime. If you perhaps live alone, this would be ideal. Young or old, this is the one to get. .

Easy to Use, But Has No Case to Store It and Ear Covers. I brought this after using a calpol ear thermometer for 2 years that started to make a high pitch noise so i decided to change to this brand. It looks nice and is easy to use giving you a result in 1 second which is good as my daughter doesn't stay still for much longer!its a bit chunky compared to the calpol thermometer and its hard to put its plastic cap on if an ear cover is in place. My only really disappointment is that it doesn't have a case to store it in or its ear probe covers and as they are really thin plastic they get damaged really easily and lost or dirty (they are exactly the same covers the hospital use on there thermometers). As you need both to take the temperature i've ended up putting it all in a tupperware container so its all in the same place but it would have been nice to have had a case like the calpol one but i suppose you can't have everything!.

Excellent. An excellent thermometer,it gives a reading straight away, very easy to use giving accurate readings, compact size and suitable for young and old. .

Conclusion of Braun Thermoscan IRT 3020 Compact Ear Thermometer

Easy to use, well - as much as can be; when trying to put something in a poorly baby's ear for 2 seconds :o(a good and more affordable option to the larger sized one, easy to read, easy to travel with. Shame that the lens covers / caps / filters are pricey - also you do get different readings so i'm not 100% convinced on accuracy - but it is still excellent for peace of mind and for giving reassurance if you can't decide if baby has a fever or not - even with the slightly differing readings. This is a brilliant little thermometer, so easy to use and a spot on reading everytime. An excellent thermometer,it gives a reading straight away, very easy to use giving accurate readings, compact size and suitable for young and old. On using it with my 4 month old baby, i put it gently in both his ears a few times in a short space of time and each time the reading was different. The reading was also very different if you don't put the clear cover over the end that goes in the ear, but the instructions say to use them. Very accurate and reliable in ear thermometer, that requires a lens filter for each use, of which some are supplied, but you will eventually have to refill.

Easy function one touch reader that takes about 1-2 seconds to read your temperature and this is shown on the large display on the side of the thermometer. It is lightweight and has a nice grip hold, so it fits comfortably in your hand during use and the in ear reader is small enough to fit any ear. This is my first experience with using an ear thermometer. Fortunately, i have not had a temperature in years, and used to use the under-tongue ones i recall from my childhoodtis thermometer is gently inserted in the outer ear canal, and is most comfortable. Recordings are very quick and the display can show your reading in both degrees celsius and fahrenheit.

I hope i never need to use it as intended, but can take some reassurance knowing that the values it displays will be an accurate representation of my body temperature. If display keeps showing lo, and batteries are ok, then change the ear piece. This is a great thermometer, it gives you a reading straight away and is very straight forward to use. Slightly cheaper than it's siblings in brauns ear thermometer range but still offers a robust and reliable temperature reading. Initially, i thought that i had received a faulty unit as one of my daughters ears was reading (when feeling unwell recently), 37.

Repeated tests on our ears and hers eventually led us to the doctor that same morning and on further inspection found inflammation of the ear and throat, quickly resulting in a course of antibiotics. I'm a doctor, and this is almost identical to devices we use at the surgery; they are accurate, clinically validated, and will give you an accurate temperature. The tip does have to be inserted fully into the ear for it to be accurate, don't be afraid to make sure the tip goes into the ear as far as it can (obviosuly not too firmly). Very pleased with this compact and easy thermometer. The instruction book is also very clear, and it's super intuitive to use: you ease it into your ear, give yourself an ear-tug to settle the probe (see instruction book), press the button for a long beep when you're ready, and wait a few seconds for the short double-beep which signals that it's done.

This unit is an improvement over the older version in that it is more compact & the probe tip is slightly smaller, but the biggest difference is in the speed of delivery of the reading, which is literally within a second of pressing the button compared to about 4 seconds for the older unit. As always there are caveats in its use, the most important of which is making sure the probe is correctly positioned in the ear canal (the number of times i've had patients complain that staff have taken a reading of their pinna temperature rather than the tympanic is phenomenal) avoiding taking the temp in an occluded or infected/blocked ear is also important. This is an odd omission as my older unit had the capacity to display the previous 8 readings and this function is useful for parents to keep track of the temperature trend over the course of use. I used this thermometer to take my temperature repeatedly over several minutes, and it returned exactly the same reading (including decimal) every time. This involves pulling the ear to ensure that the probe has clear 'line of sight' to the inner ear.

Failure to do so will result in reading being taken from the wall of the ear canal, which is likely to differ by up to several degrees. I found this thermometer to be really easy to use. The reading is taken very quickly (just 1 second) and a beep tells you it is done. This is especially useful for taking one's own temperature as (of course) you cannot see the screen whilst doing thisother good points:- a battery is pre-installed, so it works out of the box (standard 2032 'coin' battery)- the display is clear, and it retains the last reading so you can see what it was last time when you turn it on- the thermometer switches off automatically after 60 seconds, so will not run down by being left on accidentally- you can change to fahrenheit if you prefer (default is celsius)- there is a solid cover over the probe, which allows you to pre-fit a clean lens filter and have the unit ready to go for next use but kept clean by the cover- a pack of 20 filters is provided, plus one pre-fitted to the probe, i. This is quite thick plastic, so i intend to keep my thermometer and filters inside this package - it does quite well as a case to keep the dust off.

So, in a low-light environment you would not be able to read the display. The main difference is that this one reads the temperature much quicker than the irt 4520. The readings are accurate as well. It measures the temperature very quickly in 1sec and only one button is required; unlike the irt 4520 which needs longer and two buttons to read the temp in about 3-4 secs. Lovely compact thermometer but for some reason reads to high, i compared this one to the gps one on my baby and his read 37.

I also have the braun thermoscan irt 3020 compact ear thermometer which is cheaper but better than the braun thermoscan-5 irt6020 ear thermometer which is more expensive and the braun ntf3000 no touch plus forehead digital thermometer which is also pricy but need not come in contact with the skin. The differences are:the thermoscan-5 has the preheat for more accurate readings, but takes longer to take temperature and doesn't have the end beep to say it's done where as the other (and my old one) does, this matters when taking your own temperature as you can't see the display or led. The thermoscan irt 3020 is smaller, has a 1 sec read time, no preheat and is a lot cheaper, it also bleepsthe no touch plus reads in 2 secs and can be used without disturbing the patient, very useful with sleeping children. The reading takes less than a second and is really unintrusive for even the wriggliest baby. I took my own temperature 4 times and received 3 different temperatures, varying by 0.

Disappointed there is no bag to keep everything (spare covers, instructions and thermometer itself) safe and clean in. This is the basic entry-level braun in-ear thermometer, but if you are going to buy a basic in-ear thermometer, then you would want a braun - the choice of all gps i've ever known - all of the models i have owned and tried have always been very accurate and reliable and this is too, although the lack of the pre-warmed tip, does mean i have found the readings can vary slightly more - but usually only by 0. The readings are taken very quickly - just a second and there it is. You need to buy replacement filters, which aren't too expensive to order on amazon - the filters mean that there is no cross contamination between family members using the thermometer - it keeps it hygienic. Personally if you are looking for something not too costly, i would suggest the older model braun thermoscan 5 irt4520 ear thermometer, which has some great features (pre-warmed tip, stores or if you want something technologically fantastic and isn't going to wake a sleeping child or require replacement filters and you don't mind paying a bit more, then i would suggest the braun ntf3000 no touch plus forehead digital thermometer. I read various reviews on ear thermometers and some reported that when making several readings they were very inconsistent.

Quick and Easy to Use. The unit is easy to use and the results are quick so does not upset young children. .

Good Product If Used Correctly.. I received the thermometer quickly as usual with amazon. On using it with my 4 month old baby, i put it gently in both his ears a few times in a short space of time and each time the reading was different. The reading was also very different if you don't put the clear cover over the end that goes in the ear, but the instructions say to use them. I'm not sure if i'm doing it wrong, or his ears are too small or what but i'm not hugely confident with using it. But it does bring up the temperature very quickly. Good product if you use it properly. .
